Trials soon

The Guardian tells us that Vince Cable has announced trials of driverless cars will begin next year. Good, because driving is so tedious when roads become gridlocked; it's not practical to do anything much except listen to MP3s, podcasts etc.

I wonder if driverless cars will use road space more efficiently or merely clog it up.  As a futurologist I envisage eCars driven manually near people's home, shops, or work but then switching onto autopilot on main roads.  That's similar to aircraft control; movement around an airport is manual and then is switch to autopilot when taxiing is completed.

Front seats in eCars are on swivel mountings so that when on autopilot they can be turned around to face passengers.  If you want to know what it might be like why not read Serpent Dove which envisions a world in 50 years time.

All the best, EA
